Devī - Popular Mantras/Stutis attributed to her


This post provides insights into the popular mantras and stutis dedicated to Bhagavatī as described in the Vedas and various scriptures.


1. 
देवी सूक्त(Devī-sūkta) or अम्भ्राणी सूक्त(Aṃbhṛnī-sūkta) or 
वाक् सूक्त (Vāk-sūkta)
This sūkta appears in 10.125 of Ṛgveda; Ṛṣi: Vāgāmbhṛṇī, Devatā: Vāgāmbhṛṇī, Metre: Virāṭtrisṭup

2. श्री सूक्त(Śrī-sūkta)
It's part of Khilāni of Ṛgveda; 
Ṛṣi: Ānanda, Kardama, Ciklīta, Jātaveda, Devatā: Śrī & Agni

3. सरस्वती सूक्त(Sarasvatī-sūkta)
This sūkta appears in Sarasvatīrahasyopaniṣad of Ṛgveda

4. मेधा सूक्त(Medhā-sūkta)
a. One sūkta appears in 4.10.41-44 of Taittirīya Āraṇyaka of Kṛṣṇa-Yajur-Veda

5. 
दुर्गा सूक्त(Durgā-sūkta)
This sukta is from Mahānārāyaṇopaniṣad(महानारायणोपनिषद्) of Kṛṣṇa-Yajur-Veda

6. नवार्ण मन्त्र(Navārṇa-mantra)
ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे
Meaning - 
Speech (ऐं), Māyā (हीं), Brahma's desire (क्लीं), followed by the sixth consonant(च), endowed with form(चा), the Sun (म), the right ear (उ) with a nasal sound(मुं), the third letter from 'ट,' which is 'ड,' that is mixed with Nārāyaṇa (आ) (डा), Air (य), which is the lower lip (associated with ऐ, hence यै), and 'विच्चे.' 

O embodiment of consciousness, Great Sarasvatī! O embodiment of goodness, Great Lakṣmī! O embodiment of bliss, Great Kālī! We always focus on you to gain the knowledge of Brahman. O Caṇḍī, who is in form of Mahākālī, Mahālakṣmī, and Mahāsarasvatī! Salutations to you. Please free me by breaking the strong bonds of ignorance like a rope.

7. देव्यथर्वशीर्ष(Devyatharvaśīrṣa)

8. देवी माहात्म्य(Devī-māhātmya) or दुर्गा सप्तशती(Durgā-saptaśatī)
It appears in description of Sāvarṇaka-manvantara in Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa. It was recited by Ṛṣi Medhā to King Suratha and a Vaiśya named Samādhi. It has
700 श्लोक
Viniyoga is as follows:
1st chapter → Ṛṣi: Brahmā, Devatā: Mahākālī, Chanda: Gāyatrī, Śakti: Nandā, Bīja: Raktadantikā, Tattva: Agni, Svarūpa: Ṛgveda

2th-4th chapter → Ṛṣi: Viṣṇu, Devatā: Śrīmahālakṣmī, Chanda: Uṣṇik, Śakti: Śākambharī, Bīja: Durgā, Tattva: Vāyu, Svarūpa: Yajurveda

5th-13th chapter→ Ṛṣi: Rudra, Devatā: Śrīmahāsarasvatī, Chanda: Anuṣṭup, Śakti: Bhīmā, Bīja: Bhrāmarī, Tattva: Sūrya, Svarūpa: Sāmaveda

In this, Devī facilitates the killing of Madhu and Kaitabha (1st chapter) by Viṣṇu, kills Mahiṣāsura (3rd chapter), Dhūmralocana (6th chapter), Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa (7th chapter), Raktavīja (8th chapter), Niśumbha (9th chapter), and Śumbha (10th chapter).

9. महिषासुर मर्दिनी स्तोत्र(Mahiṣāsura-mardini-stotra) or "अयि गिरिनन्दिनि" स्तोत्र
It's taken from Śivarahasya Purāṇa. It has 21 श्लोक

10. ललितासहस्रनाम(Lalitā-sahasranāma)
It comes in Brahmāṇḍapurāṇa, It was narrated by Bhagavān Hayagrīva to sage Agastya.
