Śrīmannārāyaṇa - Popular Mantras/Stutis attributed to him

This post provides insights into the popular mantras and stutis dedicated to Bhagavān Viṣṇu and His Avatāras, as described in the Vedas and various scriptures.


1. ॐ नमो नारायणाय (Aṣṭākṣara-nārāyaṇa-mantra)
This mantra  appears in नारायणोपनिषत्

2. ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय (Dvādaśākṣara-mantra)
This mantra is told by Nārada while initiating Dhruva in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, 4.8.54

Meaning - I bow to Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa(Vasudeva's son)

3. श्री कृष्ण शरणम ममः (Aṣṭākṣara-mantra)
Meaning - Śrī Kṛṣṇa is my refuge

4. राधे कृष्ण राधे कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण राधे राधे राधे श्याम राधे श्याम श्याम श्याम राधे राधे (Yugala-mahāmantra)

5. हरे कृष्ण हरे कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण हरे हरे हरे राम हरे राम राम राम हरे हरे (Kṛṣṇa-mahāmantra)
The word 'हरे' can be interpreted as either 'Rādhā' or 'Hari'. Similarly, 'राम' can be interpreted as either 'Rāma' or 'Balarāma'.

6. विष्णु सहस्त्रनाम(Viṣṇu-sahasranāma)
The most popular version of विष्णु सहस्रनाम comes in Chapter 135 of Anuśāsana Parva of Mahābhārata. It was recited by Bhīṣma to Yudhiṣṭhira. It contains 1000 names of Bhagavān Viṣṇu.


7. शान्ताकारं भुजगशयनं Śloka
It's 3rd dhyāna śloka of Viṣṇu-Sahasranāma

शान्ताकारम् भुजगशयनम् पद्मनाभम् सुरेशम्
विश्वाधारम् गगनसदृशम् मेघवर्णम् शुभाङ्गम्।
लक्ष्मीकान्तम् कमलनयनम् योगिभिर्ध्यानगम्यम्
वन्दे विष्णुम् भवभयहरम् सर्वलोकैकनाथम्॥


8. पुरुष सूक्त(Puruṣa-sūkta)
This sūkta appears in Ṛgveda, 10.90; Ṛṣi: Nārāyaṇa; Devatā: Puruṣa
It also appears in 31.1-16 of the Śukla-Yajur-Veda, in verse 19.6 of the Atharvaveda, and in many other places across the Vedic corpus.

9. नारायण सूक्त(Nārāyaṇa-sūkta)
a. This sūkta appears in Anuvāka 13, Prapāṭhaka 10 of Taittirīya Āraṇyaka(Kṛṣṇa-Yajur-Veda)

b. This sūkta appears in Śukla-Yajur-Veda, Ṛṣi: Nārāyaṇa; Devatā: Āditya-Puruṣa

10. विष्णु सूक्त(Viṣṇu-sūkta)
This sūkta appears in 5.15-21 of Śukla-Yajur-Veda, Ṛṣi: Dīrghatamā

11. नारायण अथर्वशीर्ष(Nārāyaṇa-atharvaśīrṣa) or नारायणोपनिषत्(Nārāyaṇopaniṣat)
This upaniṣad belongs to the Kṛṣṇa Yajur Veda. The mantra "ॐ नमो नारायणाय" is also found in it.


12. नारायण कवच(Nārāyaṇa-kavaca)
This kavaca is recited by Viśvarūpa(Brother of Vṛtrāsura) to Indra in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, 6.8


13. हरिस्तोत्र(Hari-stotra) i.e. जगज्जालपालं(Jagajjālapālaṃ)
This stotra is composed by Svāmī Brahmānanda. It has 8 ślokas.

14. दशावतारस्तव(Daśāvatārastava)
This stuti is composed by Jayadeva. It has 12 ślokas.


15. नरसिंहस्तुति(Narasiṃha-stuti)
This stuti is recited by Prahlāda in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, 7.9.8-55


16. नरसिंह कवच(Narasiṃha-kavaca) 
This kavaca is recited by Prahlāda in Brahmāṇḍapurāṇa. It has 31 ślokas.



17. श्रीलक्ष्मीनृसिंहकरुणारस(Śrīlakṣmīnṛsiṃhakaruṇārasa)
This stōtra is composed by Ādi Śaṅkara. It has 25 ślokas.



18. नामरामायण(Nāma-rāmāyaṇa) i.e.शुद्धब्रह्मपरात्पर राम्(Śuddhabrahmaparātpara-rām)
This is composed by Lakṣmaṇāchārya. It has 108 ślokas.

19. रामरक्षास्तोत्र(Rāmarakṣā-stotra) i.e. चरितं रघुनाथस्य(Caritaṃ-raghunāthasya)
This stōtra is composed by Budhakauśika. It has 38 ślokas.

It appears in the 5th Sarga of the Janma Kāṇḍa of the Ānanda Rāmāyaṇa too with some variations; here, it has 45 ślokas. In this version, it is recited by Viṣṇudāsa to Rāmadāsa.

20. रघुपति राघव राजाराम(Raghupati Rāghava Rājārāma)
This stōtra is composed by Lakṣmaṇāchārya


21. जटायुप्रोक्ता रामस्तुति(Jaṭāyuproktā Rāma-stuti)
This stuti is done by Jaṭāyu in Adhyātmarāmāyaṇa, 3.8.44-56


22. श्रीरामस्तुति( Śrī-Rāma-stuti) i.e. श्रीरामचन्द्र कृपालु भजु मन(Śrīrāmacandra-kṛpālu-bhaju-mana)

This stuti is from Vinayapatrikā(45th Pada) written by Tulasīdāsa

23. श्रीरामहृदय(Śrīrāma-hṛdaya)
This is told by Rāmā to Hanumāna in 1.1.44- 53 of the Adhyātma Rāmāyaṇa. It has 10 ślokas.


24. श्रीरामभुजङ्गप्रयातस्तोत्र(Śrīrāma-bhujaṅga-prayāta-stotra) i.e. विशुद्धं परं सच्चिदानन्दरूपम्(Viśuddhaṃ-paraṃ-saccidānandarūpam)

This stōtra is composed by Ādi Śaṅkara. It has 29 ślokas.

25. श्रीरामस्तवराज(Śrīrāma-stavarāja)
It's recited by Nārada in Sanatkumārasaṃhitā. It has 99 ślokas.


26. गोपाल सहस्त्रनाम(Gopāla-sahasranāma)
This sahasranāma is part of Saṃmohanatantra, recited by Śiva to Pārvatī


27. भज गोविन्द(Bhaja-govinda) or मोहमुद्गर स्तोत्र(Moha-mudgara-stotra)
This stōtra is composed by Ādi Śaṅkara. It has 33 ślokas.

28. दामोदर अष्टक(Dāmodarāṣṭaka) i.e. नमामीश्वरं सच्चिदानन्दरूपं(Namāmīśvaraṃ- saccidānandarūpaṃ)

This aṣṭaka is recited by Muni Satyavrata in Padma-purāṇa


29. अच्युताष्टक(Acyutāṣṭaka) i.e. अच्युतं केशवं रामनारायणं(Acyutaṃ-keśavaṃ-rāmanārāyaṇaṃ)

This aṣṭaka is composed by Ādi Śaṅkara


30. मधुराष्टक(Madhurāṣṭaka) i.e. अधरं मधुरं (Adharaṃ-madhuraṃ)
This aṣṭaka is composed by Vallabhācārya


31. जगन्नाथाष्टक(Jagannāthāṣṭaka) i.e. कदाचित्कालिन्दीतट(Kadācitkālindītaṭa)

This stuti is done by Bhīṣma in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, 1.9.32-42




35. गरुड़ध्वजस्तोत्र(Garūḍadhvaja-stotra) or ध्रुवकृत भगवत्स्तुति(Bhagavat-stuti by Dhruva)
This stuti is done by Dhruva in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, 4.9.6-17

36. गजेन्द्रमोक्षस्तोत्र(Gajeṃdra-mokṣa-stotra)
This stuti is done by Gajeṃdra(Elephant) in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, 8.3


37. गर्भस्तुति(Garbha-stuti)
This stuti is done by Devatā(s) in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, 10.2.26-41 to Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa when he was in Devakī's womb.


38. अक्रूर कृत कृष्ण स्तुति(Kṛṣṇa-stuti by Akrūra)
This stuti is done by Akrūra in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, 10.40.1-30


39. श्रीवेङ्कटेशस्तोत्र(Śrīveṅkaṭeśa-stotra)


40. बालमुकुन्दाष्टक(Bālamukundāṣṭaka)
This aṣṭaka is composed by Bilvamaṃgala Ṭhākura


41. नारायणहृदय(Nārāyaṇa-hṛdaya)
It is embedded in उत्तरभाग of आथर्वणरहस्य.

42. श्रीविष्णुषट्पदीस्तोत्र(Śrī Viṣṇuṣaṭpadī Stōtra)
